MYP Honors Art 2
This course is the next level of instruction in visual arts to develop students’ technical skills and content knowledge using the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme’s (MYP) philosophy of teaching and approaches to instruction. It is designed to push ideas and media competencies learned in MYP Art and is a recommended prerequisite for IB Visual Arts years 1 and 2.  Students will explore drawing, painting, photography, and mixed media creations that will expand their creative possibilities. Students will also become familiar with various artists, styles, and techniques that cover academic and contemporary artist approaches to idea creation (sketchbook and practice work) and conception of works (final art pieces and display).

The IB Diploma Program visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries.  It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking.  While working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers.  In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with, and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media.  This course is designed for students who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.

To successfully complete this course, you must.


  • Be highly motivated to research and explore professional artists of the past and present.
  • Have the ability and will to actively engage in the artistic process. 
  • Be willing to actively engage in all small and whole group discussions with everyone in the class.
  • Be committed to evolving your artistic style through some failures and successes.
  • Have some familiarity with basic art techniques and formal qualities.
