Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Career-focused experiential learning programs, sometimes called Career and Technical Education (CTE), provide students with opportunities to explore careers and gain marketable skills while still in high school.

Students in CTE programs apply the information they learn in core school subjects like math, science, and writing to real-life work situations to become career- and college-ready.

There are a variety of citywide and school-based pathways that help students gain hands-on experience and work toward fulfilling CPS' Learn.Plan.Succeed. graduation requirements.

Many CTE programs also offer the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that can be used to gain full-time employment or jobs to help pay for college. To earn a certificate, students must demonstrate competency in a skill or a set of skills and pass an examination or have a certain amount and type of work experience or training.

South Shore International College Preparatory High School offers the 2 the programs below.

Business pathways prepare students to study business or finance in college, give them a jump on career planning, and teach them the fundamentals of running a successful business. Students participate in competitive events through Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Business Professionals of America (BPA) and Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).
  • Topics covered in the Business pathways include financial planning, banking, insurance, international finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, and accounting.

Pathways in Health Science presents students with an opportunity to learn about medical terminology and systems of the body, in addition to investigating how illnesses are prevented, treated, and managed. Students participate in competitive events through Future Health Professionals/Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).

Students can earn certifications and engage with health professionals through speaker events, site visits, job shadows, and internships that will advance their knowledge and experience in healthcare.
  • Topics include safety and infection control, CPR and first aid, human growth and development, vital signs, nutrition and wellness, and geriatric care.
