IB Middle Years Programme: Grades 9 and 10
The MYP Programme is a five year programme that can be implemented in shorter formats (two, three or four years). At South Shore International, ALL students in grades 9 and 10 are MYP Year 4 and 5 students. It encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, fostering creative, critical, and reflective thinking.
Key Features and Curriculum:
AT SSICP The MYP curriculum is built around seven subject groups, ensuring a broad and balanced education:
- Language and Literature: Developing communication skills in the student's primary language.
- Language Acquisition: Learning an additional language to foster intercultural understanding.
- Individuals and Societies: Exploring human behavior, societies, and environments.
- Sciences: Investigating the natural world through scientific inquiry.
- Mathematics: Developing mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills.
- Arts: Encouraging creative expression and appreciation for various art forms.
- Physical and Health Education: Promoting physical well-being and healthy lifestyles.
MYP Core elements:
- Key and Related Concepts: These are "big ideas" that ensure breadth and depth in the curriculum, promoting learning within and across traditional disciplines.
- Global Contexts: These provide shared starting points for inquiry into what it means to be internationally minded, framing a curriculum that promotes multilingualism, intercultural understanding, and global engagement.
- Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL): These are skills that help students manage their own learning, including research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management. ATL skills are fundamental for success in further education and beyond.
- Action and Service: Students are encouraged to apply what they learn in the classroom to their local and global communities, demonstrating a commitment to service and making a positive difference.
- The Personal Project: This is a culminating experience for students in their final year (Year 5, 10th grade) of the MYP. It's an extended, self-directed piece of work where students apply their ATL skills to an area of personal interest.
